Have you ever wondered about the health benefits of quail eggs? My guess is probably not, and to be honest, they weren’t really on my mind either! Mainly because chicken eggs are most likely the only egg on anyone’s mind!
I was introduced to the benefits of quail eggs from my doctor and dear friend in Sydney who recommended that my husband and I consume two a day (raw) and that my son, who at the time was 2, consume 1 a day. We have been doing this now for nearly a year and I have been loving it! These tiny wonders, packed with numerous essential nutrients, have been a staple for many of our ancestors and are now a staple in my family’s own daily routine.
The ULTIMATE Nutritional Powerhouse
I consider quail eggs nature’s multi-vitamin, because they offer a wide range of essential nutrients. Although they are small, they pack a punch with high levels of protein, vitamins (E, A, and D), minerals (nitrogen, iron, and zinc), and beneficial fats.
Despite their size, studies have shown that their nutritional value is 3-4 times greater than chicken eggs. Consuming quail eggs regularly has been believed to help fight against many diseases. Quail eggs strengthen the immune system, promote memory health, increase brain activity and stabilize the nervous system. They also help with anemia by increasing the level of hemoglobin in the body while removing toxins and heavy metals (Troutman, 1999-2012).
Quail eggs are an excellent source of antioxidants too! We all need to boost our antioxidant intake as free radicals surround us on a daily basis. Their high level of antioxidants helps neutralize harmful free radicals and reduce oxidative stress. Quail eggs are also rich in essential amino acids (linoleic, DHA, and arachidonic acid).
Some of the Many Wonders of Quail Eggs
May Help Treat Allergies
There have been studies showing that consuming quail eggs can reduce symptoms of allergies, in one study, they found that administration of quail egg homogenate to the subjects on a daily basis for a sustained period (several months in duration) resulted in significant improvements in allergy-related symptoms and a reduction in using rescue medications.
Promotes Heart Health
Quail eggs offer heart-healthy benefits as they are relatively high in the “good” HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, which is beneficial for heart health as it helps remove harmful LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, reducing the risk of heart diseases and maintaining healthy cholesterol levels.
Supports Brain Function
The yolks of quail eggs are rich in choline, an essential nutrient vital for brain health. Choline aids in the production of neurotransmitters which are responsible for brain function, memory, and cognitive abilities.
Beneficial for Skin and Hair
The high content of vitamins A, E, and B-complex in quail eggs is known to enhance skin health. Additionally, the wide range of minerals present can help strengthen hair follicles, reduces hair loss, and contribute to healthy hair growth.
Quail Eggs for Babies and Children
This superfood is ideal for babies and children alike! They can be introduced to your child when they start consuming food (obviously you need to be cautious if there are any egg allergies present). Quail eggs are a good source of DHA, which is essential for the growth, visual and functional development of the brain in infants. My little guy has one to two a day.
They also make a great lunch box snack as they are small and easy to grab with little fingers-simply boil them for three minutes, transfer to an ice bath, peel and pack!
What to do with quail eggs?
Indulge and delight in these little gems! You can check out my Quail Egg and Berry Smoothie recipe. This recipe is a quick and easy way to incorporate the benefits into your day by adding it to any smoothie! Depending on how many people I am making the smoothie for, I add 2 x eggs per adult and 1 x egg per child. So, when I make a smoothie for myself, my husband and son, I add a total of 5 eggs.
Quail eggs are truly a superfood that offers numerous health benefits. From providing essential nutrients and antioxidants to boosting the immune system and supporting heart and brain health. These tiny eggs can be boiled, fried, poached just as you would normal eggs!
If you are thinking about using quail eggs therapeutically or otherwise, do note that quail eggs are contraindicated for those with egg allergies.
