For my first miscarriage back in 2018 I choose to do it naturally at home with no medical intervention. So, when I learned that I will be having a second miscarriage, I knew that this time would be the same, I wanted to allow my body to do it naturally in its own time while being in the comfort of my own home.
As I go through my second miscarriage which is nearing completion, there are significant differences between my first and my second experience. My first miscarriage which you can read more about here was pretty painful, I experienced hours of labour pains and contractions before passing the contents of my uterus. Since that experience was so horrific for me, I waited with anticipation and nerves for this time to be the same.
However, this time around I experienced no labour pains, no contractions, slight back pain but nowhere near the pain of my first miscarriage. The main difference between my first and second is that this time I choose to use herbal and homeopathic remedies to help support my body.
Natural Remedies for Miscarriage
Since studying to become a herbalist, herbs and natural therapies have become a huge passion of mine. I find comfort in knowing that whatever ailment we face, nature has created a remedy for it. Yes, there are some times when we need Western medicine but that has its time and place and in my humble opinion it’s less often than most people think. Women who elect to miscarry without surgery can choose to take medication, most of the time they prescribe you mifepristone or misoprostol. These medications cause the uterus to contract to allow your body to miscarry. However, there are herbs you can take that can have the same effect.
When I learned that my pregnancy wasn’t viable I immediately went to see my naturopath and worked together to formulate the proper tinctures. I took a mix of both herbal and homeopathic remedies. Below I share what I used to help support me.
Homeopathic Remedies
Homeopathic medicine is a form of alternative medicine that uses highly diluted substances to stimulate the body’s natural healing process.
Homeopathy Remedy One: Grief Remedy
This tincture helped with the deep sadness I felt after learning I would miscarry. It helped balance my emotions and made me feel equanimous. This was a blend of the following:
Rescue remedy
Passiflora
White Chestnut
Walnut
Star of Bethlehem
Gentian
Mimulus
Ignatia
Homeopathy Remedy Two: Emmenagogue Remedy
Emmenagogues are a type of herb that is used to stimulate menses. This certain blend also helped to ensure there was no retained placenta, allowing my body to expel and cleanse the uterus.
Hedeoma
Caulophyllum
Homeopathy Remedy Three:
Gossypium, also known as cotton root bark, is an excellent herb to gently and effectively start contractions.
Herbal Remedies
We used a blend of the below emmenagogue herbs that are widely recommended for facilitating a miscarriage to encourage my miscarriage to begin.
Black Cohosh
Blue Cohosh
False Unicorn Root
Post Miscarriage Care
These are practices and things I took after I miscarried to help support my body and immune system to prevent any risk of infection.
Bengkung Belly Wrapping
My favourite postpartum ritual after my son was born was bengkung belly wrapping. Bengkung belly wrapping is a traditional postpartum practice in Southeast Asia that involves wrapping the belly and hips after having a baby. The wrapping is believed to decrease the length of postpartum bleeding, reduce swelling and fluid retention (among other things! You can read more about my experience using it after the birth of my son here.) A day after I miscarried I wrapped my belly to help reduce the length of bleeding and to feel nourished and supported. It is so comforting to wear, as if someone is holding you. I have been wearing it for a couple days now and I can say that my bleeding has been far less than my first miscarriage.
Echinacea Tincture
Echinacea helps stimulate the immune system so I am taking it three times a day to help prevent against any infection.
Rosehip Tea
I have been sipping on rose hip tea throughout the day as it’s very high in anti-oxidants and supports the immune system. Rosehips are a blood building tonic and are one of the most concentrated forms of vitamin C in the world.
Gentle Exercise for the Mind & Body
I have been incorporating walking, meditation and restorative yoga into my days to help ease my body back into movement and to keep my mind happy and present after my loss.
Empowered Miscarriage at Home
Miscarriage is an awful thing to go through, there really are no words to describe the pain you feel after such a loss. However, you can have an empowered miscarriage at home. My experience this time around with the support of herbs and homeopathic remedies made such a difference. The whole process was so gentle on my body compared to my first miscarriage and my emotions are much more balanced. I feel like my pre-pregnant self, my energy is back, my mood is lifted and my heart feels at peace.
