My wholesome seed porridge is one of our breakfast staples-our two-year-old, Louie, is especially a fan! It’s cozy, comforting and, above all else, packed with wholesome ingredients! It is one of those breakfasts you can throw together on the fly. Not much time is needed to make this tasty, wholesome porridge. It’s a great way to start the day and can be enjoyed by the whole family.
I was never a real porridge or oatmeal lover, yes back in the day as a kid I smashed a few maple and brown sugar quick oats packs (I mean who didn’t, am I right?!) However, when I had my son it really inspired me to cook a variety of options and things that would be kid-friendly and super nutritious! My normal go-to breakfast is a breakfast salad-which I could eat happily every day, but on days I want something cozier, I welcome a bowl of porridge.
Porridge’s All-star Ingredient-Oats!
Porridge is an absolute powerhouse of a meal, a healthy blend of complex carbohydrates, soluble fibre and protein providing you with heaps of nutritional value.
The primary ingredient is oats, formally named Avena sativa is the edible grain of the oat grass that ends up in our bowls. Seeds of oats are widely available in several forms. The most popular is what we use to make oatmeal or porridge.
Types of Oats:
Oat groats– The whole oat kernel
Steel-cut oats– Oat groats that are coarsely sliced with a steel blade. These require longer cooking times.
Old-fashioned oats– Oat groats that have been steamed prior to rolling to give them their flat shape.
Quick or Instant oats– Oat groats that have been steamed for a longer period prior to rolling into very thin pieces, so they cook a lot quicker. Be aware when purchasing these types of oats that you ensure they are organic and not sweetened.
Get Creative, Make it Your Own!
Porridge is a super forgiving recipe, meaning you can make it your own easily. If you don’t have some of the below ingredients, swap them out for things you have. Get creative by adding flavours that suit your pallet and tailor it to be seasonal-friendly depending on where you live. If it is summer, add some fresh berries or if it is winter, add some more warming spices like ginger, cinnamon and clove.
I hope you love this wholesome porridge as much as my family does. It’s nutritious, creamy, comforting and nourishing!
